How to stop your anger– a really simple trick

The blood has risen up to the top of your head and is bursting to get out, you’ve ground your teeth and bitten your tongue as hard as you can, and your hand is inches from launching the plate across the room.

You are one ticking time bomb.

There are no words that can calm you, self-talk is not helping, you just want to unleash and right this minute. You have totally lost all control.

You know you will regret it in 30 mins time after you’ve let loose and calm down. You’ll hate yourself for being such a monster and you’ll be filled with remorse at the things you can’t believe that you said.

Anger can be such a terrifying emotion and one that is immensely difficult to control.

Unless you know a very simple trick. I learned it from Fiona, my Naet therapist during our session last week. She had heard it from someone talking at the Hay House Summit. He specializes in the brain and the mind and is very very clever. Through his research into the mind body connection and all that jazz he discovered this little trick.

If you employ it, you cannot get angry.

Apparently this is truth. I have not been angry since learning about it so can’t test it out and let you know my findings. And since I’m welcoming a lot of zen into my life right now, I don’t want to wait to tell you until I have an emotional outburst. Because that is not going to happen!!

So all you have to do is put your tongue on the bottom of your mouth. Told you it was simple.

If you think about it, your tongue is always engaged up, it’s never resting down. When it rests it calms the anger, and it’s impossible to get angry. I taught a thumb sucker in the US. She was 12 and was prone to outbursts. Whenever one was coming on, she’d start sucking her thumb and it would calm her down. When you suck your thumb your tongue is on the bottom of your mouth.

So there you go. Next time you feel the temperature rising, get that tongue down!

Thanks for the tip. I’ll definitely keep it in mind the next time I feel my blood boiling – which these days has been more often than usual – the stress of living with my parents and not being ‘free’ is starting to get to me.

Oh Melly boo I so feel your pain. Remember to breathe and focus on your ultimate goal. IT will help you to remember why you are doing it. Something great will come of it and in the meantime it is the perfect opportunity for you to practice patience and grow into a better person. Trust me you will!!! I was only thinking the other day how much calmer and more patient I am now because I’ve been tested so much. Get out as much as you can and try to find the happy moments and focus on that. So much easier said than done, I know. This too shall pass.

Yes! I think the time you need it most. Was just thinking this morning how I can’t wait to go on this road trip as it will mean no more crazy rush hours. Horrible way to start the day.

I think the secret to this tip is that it’s actually making you mindful, and your focus shifts. Instead of exploding about whatever is making you angry, your brain goes ‘okay, shift focus, lets press this tongue down’.

    Brilliant!
